Honor Flight

My Dad always complained when we would go to visit Aunt Mary...there is nothing for the WW11 veterans. Korean memorial, Vietnam memorial...why not the greatest generation. When I heard that they were finally building a memorial...I knew he had to go. He was already in Wittenberg assisted living, still getting around fairly well...Jeremy & I visited Washington DC in June that year. We flew out of Indy on a short flight to Reagan International. Took the subway into DC. Stayed at the Holiday Inn Capitol. This is it I thought, this is the perfect way to get him there. So I proposed the plan to the family...we can do it...come along...Mike and Verna and all of their kids (except Joshua) went. Even Luke and his two little girls. Evia just born that July. Dave & Sandy, Nancy, Patty, Jerry & I, and Jeremy. I called Steve Cobb who lives nearby and asked if he could get us a wheel chair. He was waiting at the airport....with a chair and another surprise...Aunt Mary had flown in to be with us!!! That was so neat! He loaded us up in a van and took us downtown. The hotel was so convenient with a swimming pool on the roof...we enjoyed meals with Steve and Tania and their kids. The next day we took the trolley to the capital and met with Senator Lugar's staff. They gave us a guided tour of the capital building. Then on past the White House, the Washington Monument and ended up at our goal ...the beautiful monument to all the veterans from World War 2. Everyone took a turn pushing Dad, he wore his red VFW hat and several people stopped our caravan, shook his hand, and said THANK YOU...Thank you for serving. Needless to say...Dad was overwhelmed by the monument. I was afraid that he wouldn't quite get the scope of it...but I know he did. We walked all the way to the Lincoln monument, throught the Korean and Vietnam memorials...then walked all the way back to catch the shuttle. The next day, we took him on the Duck tour. Caught a boat/car at Union station, toured the city and then drove into the Potomac. He got a kick out of that!! We could have never did it without Steve's help. THANK YOU STEVE!! As I was driving him back to Wittenberg when we arrived home, he looked at me, smiled that grin, and said THAT WAS A GOOD TRIP! He was so proud of his picture book. He showed it to anyone that would look at it. Probably several times. We were so proud to be able to do that for our Dad! I think of this trip often, when I see the "Honor Flights" that they are doing now for WWII vets that have not been able to make the trip. I'm so glad we honored ours.

RIP Warren Lee Warren died doing something he loved. He was messing with some dirt that he had delivered in his pasture. He evidently had a heart attack. His hat was laying in the field several yards from the ditch. The tractor went straight into the ditch. Matt and Jerry saw his body 100 feet or so down the ditch. Warren was a good friend and neighbor. They'll miss him at the "Farmer's table"

Hi all, Jerry just finished his test and there was no blockage. Guess the toast and cheese didn't cause it. Must be me...just making his heart flutter. He'll probably stay the night and come home in the morning.

Well, Shel, there is something about Feb. 9th. We're sitting in the hospital as I type on Nancy's computer. Nancy, Janet, Sandy and I were having lunch when Jerry called and said he had another dizzy spell and was going to have Tom take him to Dr. Hile's. He did a EKG and his heart rate was 166. He said to get him right to the hospital. It was still high up here, but gave him some dixotoxin(sp) and it went down the second EKG up here was back to perfect. So...they're going to do an ultrasound of his heart and an angigram tomorrow to see if there is any blockage. He's feeling good right now. He had a spell like this around thanksgiving. So...I'll keep you all updated. So glad your baby pics look good Shel & James. Take it easy.

It was a Tuesday

I remember it like it was yesterday

It was one of the worst days of my life

I had talked to her doctor that morning

He said she was doing better

She would probably go home soon but should not be alone

I went to the church

I talked with Ken, and told him I thought I was going to go

down there this weekend and bring them home

I remember Verna coming into the office and telling me she was gone.

The worst part...thinking of Dad down there by himself...

calling my siblings and telling them....

calling Nancy and breaking her heart.

We had a grand time yesterday...eating all our favorite foods..

But here's what I wanted to say last night..

Since 1999...5 of her grandkids have gotten married and brought

beautiful spouses into our family....she has had 7 more great-grandkids

that will never know her except throught the stories we tell them.

Two more precious bundles on the way...she would have loved them all

I remember her strength...and the pain she endured through

all those years of arthritis...dialysis...

"One day at a time" she would say.

The legacy she has left us will go on

for ten times ten years to come.

Tell them your stories

Renters can camp out in iconic Airstream trailers

Las Vegas —- Three campgrounds across America are getting some new tenants, but campers need not be jealous of their shiny silver neighbors —- the Airstream rigs are for rent.
Kampgrounds of America Inc. and Airstream Inc. are placing 25 of the company’s most popular model trailers at KOA campgrounds in Las Vegas; Bar Harbor, Maine; and Key West, Fla., letting travelers rent the recognizable trailers like hotel rooms.
“A lot of people, frankly, don’t know we’re still in business because the trailers have looked largely the same over the years,” Airstream Chief Executive Bob Wheeler said. “We know there’s a demand —- so it’s just a matter of providing it in an easy and successful way in a great setting.”
Airstreams are instantly identifiable by their long, rounded shape —- imagine a giant aluminum Twinkie —- and have been a historic part of American culture since the company began manufacturing trailers in the 1930s.
Wheeler said the company has been looking for years for ways to introduce potential customers to the trailers. Until now, people have had to purchase an Airstream or know someone who owns one to sleep in its silvery confines.
The models at the campgrounds —- the 25-foot Flying Cloud —- retail for about $67,000, Wheeler said.
“It’s a trial experience,” he said.
Wheeler and Shane Ott, chief operating officer of Kampgrounds of America, said the Airstream rentals do more than just familiarize customers with the cushy amenities of a high-end recreational vehicle.
The rental trailers come fully stocked with linens and kitchenware. Tourists need only open the door to a turnkey travel experience, just like a hotel room. Other than that, the Airstreams are largely unmodified from factory versions, Wheeler said.
Ott and Wheeler said they hope the program expands. There are more than 450 Kampgrounds of America sites in North America, but the vast majority are franchises with independent owners. KOA was offering nights in one of 10 Airstreams at an introductory $45 rate in Las Vegas and expected to make $170 to $220 a night from 10 trailers in Maine and five in Florida, Ott said.
Ott said nightly space rates at the Las Vegas campground —- on the Las Vegas Strip next to the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino —- run $30 to $100 for a spot for visitors who arrive with their own trailers or RVs.
In the hotel next door, room rates were as little as $26 for weeknights in February.
“Talk to any of these people here and none of them have made a decision to stay at this campground based on the hotel rates,” Ott said. “It’s a lifestyle decision —- people love the nomadic lifestyle of owning an RV and packing their stuff.”
Airstream trailers have a particularly devoted following, spawning clubs for owners and books and Web sites for fans to brush up on Airstream history.
NASA paid $250,000 in 1963 for a set of four modified Airstream trailers to isolate astronauts after a series of planned moon landings. One of the units was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution in 1974.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York has a Bambi model Airstream from 1960 in its permanent Architecture and Design collection.
But why put a travel trailer in a museum? The collection’s senior curator, Paola Antonelli, says the Airstream was modern during a crucial time in U.S. history.
“The Airstream —- both an object of architecture and one of design, both a technological and an aesthetic masterpiece, and a triumph of design for the people —- came to embody the sense of progress, dynamism, curiosity, and energy that are at the basis of MoMA’s idea of modernity,” Antonelli said.

HOW POOR ARE WE??

One day a father, of a very wealthy family,
took his son on a trip to the country
with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people can be.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm
of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from the trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "It was great Dad!" "Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son. "So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered, " I saw we have one dog and they have four.
We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden
and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden
and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard
and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on
and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.
We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us,
and they have friends to protect them." With this the boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery adversity of

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem.

You can't tell a vet just by looking.
He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.
He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.
She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.
He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL.
He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.
He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.
He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.
He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor diesunrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.
He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.
He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.
He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.
So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You.
That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.
Two little words that mean a lot,

This was another poem I was going to have someone read. We do have a lot to be thankful for....the wonderful family this man is responsible for....though it was Mom that took us to Sunday School and church, Dad provided for us as he worked from morning to night. Thank you all for the wonderful tribute we gave him last Monday....Thank you Dave for being the "getter"...for giving him a break from those long days in the nursing home...Thank you Jacinda, for bringing a smile to his face and many other residents and staff each week...Thank you Janet for being the pill keeper and taking him to so many appointments....Thank you Mike for giving him peace in his last hours....Thank you Patty for keeping him in your thoughts....I know you wanted to be here more, but distance makes it hard....Thank you, Thank you Nancy....for so many wonderful memories recorded and preserved for us, for our children, and our children's children. Thank you all, for the many stories we heard as people came to pay their respects. The Log Cabin was truly a unique place. Thank you Jerry....for giving it a new life.

So, now they've taken away what this guy loved the most....coke, milk, liquids....they said the speech therapists said he was having a problem swallowing. I took him a milk shake the other day and Martha said "I didn't see that" They brought him his dinner and all he had was a scoop of green s**t...was supposed to be pea salad and a plate with a scoop of ground up tuna. He had a container of green ice for dessert. Then they brought his "milk" and "juice" on the paper it said nectar thickened cranberry juice and nectar thickened milk....yuck!! There is a care meeting on May 24th. I'm going to complain about the change in diet. I also got his bill yesterday and they have charged him $675 for Oral function therapy every other day! If anyone wants to go to the meeting, let me know.
